Morningside Estate, Gisborne
An environmentally sensitive and respectful landscape project involving a master-planned residential estate on previously vacant pastoral land with strong environmental character.
Morningside Estate is a master-planned residential estate located in Gisborne, a picturesque township in the Macedon Ranges, north-west of Melbourne.
hansen partnership was engaged by developer and builder Dennis Family Corporation to design, document and oversee the construction of landscape works within stage one of the Morningside Estate development.
The site was previously vacant pasture land, featuring strong environmental character with extensive mature canopy vegetation, undulating topography, natural drainage lines and views towards the distant Mount Macedon. In turn, our design philosophy was to ‘design with the site’, with a focus on integrating the residential estate whilst protecting and further enhancing the valuable existing natural environment.
Integral to this process, an extensive number of trees were retained through the sensitive layout of allotments, building envelopes, infrastructure and public open space. Trees that were required to be removed were milled on site, providing recycled timber for use in landscape elements including seating, retaining walls and board walks.
Drainage lines, overland flow paths and retention basins were created in response to site topography and natural drainage flow, according to the principles of water sensitive urban design. These and garden bed areas were then planted with a palette of indigenous species of local provenance, from grasses to ephemeral wetland species, creating an ecological aesthetic. Plant quantities far exceeded net gain requirements, with an excess of 52,500 native plants being installed in stage one alone.
The Morningside Estate was awarded the Judges Landscaping Award in the 2007 UDIA Awards.
