The Small Australian Project Making An International Splash

November 6, 2017

Hansen Partnership’s MacKenzie Falls Gorge Trail, for Parks Victoria, will be recognised at the upcoming International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA) 10th IFLA Asia-Pac Landscape Architecture (LA) Awards at a gala dinner in Bangkok in November.

Hansen’s project, MacKenzie Falls Gorge Trail, located in the Grampians National Park in Victoria,  received an Outstanding Award for the Parks and Open Space Category.

An Outstanding Award is the highest award honoured for IFLA Asia-Pacific LA awards where the project exceeds all areas of expectations in terms of quality, standards and thought leadership of design and practice, making it an exemplary project and benchmarks for others.

“We are honoured to have the MacKenzie Falls Gorge Trail, recognised by IFLA, as we believe this project is a great example of what can be achieved with a light touch and small budget”. Said Steve Schutt, Hansen’s Director of Landscape Architecture.

The award-winning MacKenzie Falls Gorge Trail project moulds innovation with a back-to-basics approach to deliver a bold design solution and enhanced visitor experience at one of Australia’s largest waterfalls, located within the Grampians National Park, Victoria.

The Hansen design team worked closely with Parks Victoria staff to gain an appreciation of the natural setting, with the remoteness of the site and lack of base data requiring the team to rely on more basic, hands-on techniques such on-site visual mapping and photo assessment, allowing the delivery of a bespoke, highly site-specific response.

The design included the realignment of the MacKenzie Falls Trail and a new footbridge crossing the MacKenzie River. The new trail traverses the river through steep and challenging terrain, setting up dramatic spatial sequences that better connect people to the landscape.

The prestigious IFLA Asia-Pacific Region Landscape Architecture Awards, now known as the IFLA Asia-Pac LA Awards, aim to create a stronger awareness and recognition of landscape architecture as one of the key professions that plays a key role in shaping our cities and our environments towards a better, more resilient future.
