Box Hill Urban Realm Treatment Guidelines Update
In 2017, Hansen Partnership was engaged by Whitehorse City Council to prepare the updated Box Hill Metropolitan Activity Centre (MAC) Urban Realm Treatment Guidelines (BHURTG), based on the earlier document prepared by Hassell Studio in 2011.
The guidelines sought to define the preferred design framework and quality, style and application of public realm elements within Box Hill. They are intended to direct a more consistent urban character, while at the same time, define a program that is unique to Box Hill and its character.
The guidelines provide Council and relevant planning applicants with a single and clear reference document to guide improvements within the activity centre, in coordination with new development in the private realm, without the need to continually re-invent or re-design the preferred public realm treatments.
The project was made up of two parts: part one delivered an overarching guidelines document outlining an analysis of existing conditions, preferred street types and the corresponding street furniture/treatments with part two including a technical details document outlining Council’s preferred details for hard and soft landscape elements.
