News – Nightingale 3 (NG3.0) Wins at VCAT

November 8, 2017

Hansen Partnership are pleased to confirm that the latest Nightingale Housing project  (NG3.0) by Austin Maynard Architects at 209 Sydney Road, Brunswick, has been granted planning approval by the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT).

The Nightingale Housing model is an important deliberative housing alternative in that it “…supports, educates and advocates for the delivery of designer led multi-residential housing which considers at its core: social health; economic resilience; and environmental sustainability.” You can read more here.

The VCAT decision is also another endorsement of the merits of decoupling housing from car ownership; particularly where context and transport infrastructure support this proposition. In handing down the decision, VCAT Senior member Hewet noted:  “The site’s location in an activity centre and its proximity to a range of public transport and alternative transport options, complemented by the proposal’s management regime, is sufficient to persuade me that a waiver of car parking requirements is appropriate in this location.” This decision will provide encouragement for an alternative urban consolidation model that will contribute to improved housing affordability and sustainability.

The project was well supported by Moreland City Council, and in granting the application, VCAT made no amendments to the original design. Hansen acknowledges the support of Moreland City Council, and a range of collaborative partners and we are proud to continue our successful association with Nightingale Housing.

NG3.0  is one of three Nightingale Housing developments that Hansen has provided Urban Planning approvals strategy, reporting and stakeholder consultation services, along with our role in the approval of NG1.0 at 6 Florence Street Brunswick (by Breathe Architecture), which is due for completion before Christmas 2017  and  72a Station Street, Fairfield (by Six Degrees Architects), which begins construction this month.
